Why is the water heater making noise?

An exploding water heater is life-threatening. Such an incident not only poses a risk to the homeowners, but can also cause serious damage to the home. Most quality water heaters can last 10-15 years. Their lifespan depends on how they are used, proper care, and good maintenance.
Water heaters can explode for several reasons, such as mechanical failure or overpressure. Overheating of the appliance is one of the clearest signs of this. Increased pressure can lead to the explosion of the water heater. Both gas and electric appliances explode.
Boilers are equipped with safety mechanisms. They prevent excessive pressure levels from rising. However, when malfunctions occur, an explosion can occur.

When the temperature is set too high, the thermal expansion of the water increases the pressure inside the tank to extreme levels. The sediment collected at the bottom of the tank has an insulating effect. This can raise the temperatures inside the appliance above a safe level. Rust and corrosion in the boiler prevent it from working properly and interfere with pressure regulation. Other defects in some parts can significantly increase the temperature inside the appliance. They also lead to higher pressure.

If the temperature safety valve does not function properly, then it can lead to irreparable damage. Its function is to push excess pressure out of the appliance. Otherwise, it begins to build up until the boiler explodes.
When the temperature and pressure rise too high, the appliance starts to give some warning signs. One of the common reasons for a water heater to explode is a failure of the safety valve. It regulates the temperature and pressure.

A leaking valve is a sure sign that you need to seek service. The damage indicates the inability of this component to cope with the internal pressure in the water heater. Other signs of a serious malfunction are: the presence of air in it, brown water leaking, a small amount of water in the device, a faulty thermostat or cracking noises from the inside.
Here are the main reasons leading to a household water heater exploding:

Leaking valve

Presence of air in the device

The brown water leak

Cracking sounds from inside

A small amount of water

Faulty thermostat
