Reasons for washing machine overflowing

The problem of filling your washing machine with more water than necessary is quite unpleasant. But it can also be dangerous. In this case, there is a very real risk that your home will flood, and repairing the damage will be expensive and laborious.

There are several reasons for an overflow problem. One of them is a blockage in the drainage system or its hose. Debris gets into it, and its deposits lead to its blockage. This leads to the washing machine being overfilled with water.

You can fix this problem yourself by cleaning the filters on your washing machine. If this is the cause of the overflow, then you can rest easy. However, if you continue to have problems with excessive water in your washing machine, it is best to contact a professional.

Among other reasons for such a malfunction of the washing machine is a failure of the solenoid valve. In some cases, it is missing, which leads to overflow of the appliance. The problem is not at all unimportant, because the malfunction in the electronic  valve is removed by a service technician. It is better not to try to fix the fault yourself if you do not have the necessary technical skills or are not sure of the cause of the excessive amount of water.

Incorrect connection of the washing machine to the sewage system is also among the annoying, but also the main causes of overflow. The incorrect connection leads to its return back to the washing machine, and thus the appliance itself (the so-called connecting vessel) overflows. You can also determine for yourself whether this is exactly the cause of the problem. Check whether the washing machine hose has a minimum height of 60 cm upwards (a bend).

There are other possible problems that lead to the washing machine overflowing. One of them is a fallen hose for pumping at the very bottom of the appliance. This leads to the washing machine “self-draining” and subsequent refilling with water. The appliance itself does not “recognize the water level” – and starts to refill in seconds, which leads to its overflow.

The reason may be a worn hose on the water level regulator. In some washing machines, it is not installed at the factory and over time it wears out due to the vibration of the centrifuge. This leads to air entering the hose, which causes the appliance to overflow. If the water valves are not closed all the way, the washing machine will fill even when the machine is turned off or at times when you have not used it. If you notice that the appliance is filling itself with water without you having turned it on, then your problem is almost certainly in the clean water valves.

Having more than the permissible amount of water in the appliance is a serious problem. At the first sign of overflow, you should turn off the water tap. Then disconnect the washing machine from the electrical supply. This will prevent the possibility of flooding the home.
