What are demo, child protection and diagnostic modes in appliances?
Modern electrical appliances are equipped with new technologies that, in addition to high efficiency, provide greater safety for us and our family. One of the functions of modern washing machines, dryers and dishwashers is called child mode.
When children are left unattended, they love to explore the world around them, and their favorite activity is pressing the buttons on the washing machine, for example. This can damage the appliance if it is not equipped with a special lock function.
Modern machines have a child mode that is activated after a few buttons on the control panel are pressed indiscriminately. The function locks the program setting buttons and prevents changes from being made, even when the washing machine, dryer, dishwasher or oven is in a cycle. When the child mode is activated, the “Child Lock” icon appears on the display of your machine.
Don't worry if you encounter this inconvenience. The function can be deactivated quite easily and it is not advisable to call a technician to fix the problem. In different models of washing machines, dryers and dishwashers, turning off the child mode is quite similar. To deactivate the "Child Lock" function, you need to press two of the buttons at once.
In most models of electrical appliances, the buttons for turning off the mode are located on the right side of the control panel. To deactivate the function in other models, you need to press the start button for at least a few seconds until the “Child Lock” icon disappears. If you want to know which buttons to use, it is better to look at the user manual, where all the information about your appliance is contained.

Another feature that can be a real concern for any homeowner is the demo mode. It prevents users from setting the desired program on the washing machine, for example. This feature is also used to lock the appliance if necessary. In demo mode, the machine appears to be on and running. In fact, the wash cycles are disabled and the control panel does not function at all, just moves the drum left and right as if it were in store mode.
To turn off demo mode on most modern washing machine models, follow these steps:
- Turn on the power.
- Press the "Tools" button.
- Turn on the "Information" button;
- Check if "Demo Mode" is enabled;
- If the mode is “ON”, press the button to activate the function.
Some electrical appliances also have a mode called "Diagnostics". It is quite often used for various household appliances, such as washing machines, dishwashers or dryers. In fact, the mode is a very useful option for any user when a certain problem occurs with the operation of the machine.
The function is activated by the service technician himself in order to diagnose the malfunction that has occurred with the electrical appliance. Turning on the mode for different washing machines, dishwashers or dryers is almost identical. To activate the "Diagnostics" mode, you need to turn it off and on with the On/Off button.
