How to unlock a washing machine door
Sometimes the washing machine door won't open, even after the cycle is over. This can be extremely annoying, especially if you have clothes left in the drum. Fortunately, there are several solutions to this problem. Some of them are extremely ingenious and guarantee that the door will open in all cases.
The first thing you need to do is unplug the appliance. Wait 5-6 seconds and check if the door unlocks. Most hatches open if the machine is unplugged and the temperature inside drops. Then tap the handle lightly or press the start button.
If the door won't open, try to release the latch mechanism with the power off. Lightly tap the handle with your palm just above the lock. For some doors, this will be enough to unlock them.
Wait 5 minutes and try to open the door. Some locks automatically release the latch after the machine has been turned off for a while. Another solution to the problem is to remove the front bottom panel of the appliance. This will give you access to the locking mechanism, which is colored. Try to deactivate it, thus freeing the washing machine door.
Press “pause” or “start” to try to open the door. This may sound simple, but there is an explanation. Try pressing “pause” and wait 1-2 minutes for the door to unlock. Most hatches will not open when the washing machine is running.
On some machines, the start button functions as a pause button if you want to stop a cycle that is running. Unplug the washing machine. If pressing the pause button does not unlock the door, unplug the power cord.
Wait 5-10 minutes and try pulling the handle again to check if the door opens. Some locks automatically return to the unlocked position after 5-10 minutes to allow the laundry to be removed from the drum in the event of a power outage.
Another option is to remove the front bottom panel of the washing machine. You can use a flat screwdriver. Before attempting to remove the panel, place towels under the appliance if the problem occurred during the wash cycle.
When the washing machine stops but there is still water in it, it is advisable to place dishes on the floor under the bottom of the machine. This way you will prevent the possibility of flooding the living space.
Lift one end of the washing machine and pull out the drain hose. Empty the water into a bucket. The door may unlock as soon as you drain the liquid from inside the appliance. Some hatches lock automatically if there is a lot of water in the washing machine.
And the doors of top-loading appliances are affected by the heat inside. They only lock when the appliance is running. This feature gives you access to your wet clothes in the event of a power outage or other failure.
To remove the bottom panel, you need to insert the screwdriver from the right or left side of the appliance, but never in the center. If you try to open the front cover in the middle of the washing machine, you are likely to break it, as the tension is highest there.
Locate the plastic tab located under the panel you removed. It is colored to distinguish it. The tab is connected directly to the lock. It is designed to manually open the door in the event that the latch mechanism fails. Pull the tab down while attempting to open the door.

And now comes the most unconventional option for opening the hatch. For this, you can use a fishing line, the length of which is 25-50 cm. Wrap it around the door. Tie the end of it in a knot, making sure that it completely surrounds the frame of the hatch.
If the problem is with the door mechanism, this is the best way to open the washing machine. Sometimes a defect in the handle makes it impossible to unlock the door because its connection to the locking system is broken. Pull the cord from the door handle by holding it by the knot. Carefully remove the cord from the door at an angle parallel to the front of the machine.
Continue applying pressure until you hear a click. Hold the cord with one hand and pull the handle with the other to open the door. This will unlock the latch on the closing mechanism.
You can also use the well-known method of opening with a plastic card. You have probably seen how doors are unlocked with similar plastics. Your old bank card can also come into use. Slide it into the space where the lock is located. If your door still does not open, contact a washing machine repair company. There may be a more serious defect in the door that keeps it locked.
